Stanton Hospital Over Half Way Complete

By John Curran

Yellowknife’s new Stanton Territorial Hospital is now more than 60 per cent complete and it is expected to open to the public by the summer of 2019.

According to the most recent numbers available from the GNWT, a total of 760,778 hours have been worked at site to date.

“[It’s] progressing as expected for such a complex project,” stated Andrew Livingstone, Senior Communications Advisor with the GNWT.

The hospital is one of several Northern construction projects in recent years to be built through a Public-Private Partnership (P3) arrangement.

Boreal Health Partnership (BHP) won the competition to design, build, finance and maintain the new Stanton Hospital for 30 years. The partners within BHP include: Carillion Canada Inc., HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions North America Inc. and Bird Capital Limited on the finance side; Bird Design Build Construction Inc., Clark Builders, and Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd. are the design and build know-how; Crossey Engineering Ltd. and Weiler Smith Bowers Consulting Structural Engineering bring engineering expertise; and Carillion Canada Inc. will conduct maintenance work during its operational life.

The total value of the contract signed with BHP is $751 million, which includes the 30-year maintenance agreement during the post-construction operations phase.

The GNWT reported, on the dedicated project website, that the cost of replacing the hospital through a traditional design and build program rather than a P3 deal would have been $1.1 billion including three decades of maintenance work. The savings for the GNWT works out to roughly 25 per cent or $290 million.

As of Oct. 31, 2017, more than $32.6 million has been paid to local Northern suppliers and contractors involved in the build.

Livingstone said there are currently about 250 trades workers active at site on a daily basis completing a range of tasks. These include exterior cladding, mechanical / plumbing, electrical, elevators, drywall, carpentry, painting, flooring, medical gas, millwork, interior glazing, as well as interior manual and auto sliding door installation.
